Admissions

Discovery Academy is a special school with 80 planned places for children aged 7– 16 who either have a diagnosis of autism, or are on the diagnostic pathway. They may also have related Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) Needs. Some children may also have specific learning difficulties (SPLD) which results in them working below age-related expectations in some subjects.

For a child to be admitted, the school must be named, by a local authority, in the child’s Education, Health and Care Plan (‘EHCP’).

The school is not responsible for allocating school places as the above process must be followed.

Curriculum


Learning at Key Stage 2 (7-11 years old)

Fun: our pupils are provided with fun learning spaces and opportunities to use play as a way in which to learn.
Positivity: our pupils work alongside staff who are positive about what each individual can achieve and the progress they can make in all areas of their life.

Learning at Key Stage 3 (11-14 years old)

Key Stage 3 aims to prepare students to begin to make a positive difference in our communities and to begin to think about aspiration for paid employment and independence.
Through respectful relationships we show each other kindness and love towards each other. By doing this we ensure that students feel that they have a voice which is listened to. We celebrate our strengths and are confident to take risks and learn from our mistakes.

Learning at Key Stage 4 (14-16 years old)

Students at key stage 4 will follow their BTEC options programmes alongside accessing their accredited core subjects of English, Maths, Science and Computing. We will ensure that students and their families understand the pathway they are embarking on and what outcomes for key stage 5 are realistic and possible

School Day


Students will arrive to school via local authority transport, family drop offs and public transport. A period of 15 minutes before registration will allow staff to support students into learning zones. Home time reflection will allow students time with their form teachers to provide each of them with a ‘book ending’ approach to finishing the school day. Again 15 minutes will be given at the end of the school day to ensure transport arrangements are completed in a safe and efficient manner.
